Technology has made our lives easier. In the last 10 years, we live in a very fast changing world. I still remember when I sent a message using post office service when I was a kid. It was very inconvenient. I had to write the message in a piece of paper, fold and put it into an envelope and walk a couple miles to pass it to the nearby post office.

Today, everything has changed. Technology does the hard part for us. No need to go to the post office anymore. With a single dial on our phones using short message service or a single click on our laptops (wi-fi supported) to send a message over the internet, our messages are good to go. I’ve been using Firefox since…forever. This is the best browser on earth. The first time I heard Firefox 3.1 beta 2 had been released, I immediately downloaded it and installed it on my computer. There’s lots of significant improvement compared to the old version.

• using a new private browsing mode which allows you to browse without leaving traces of where you’ve been
• a new function to remove history in an instant
• new support for worker threads
• supports for new tracemonkey javascript engine
• Improvements to the Gecko layout engine, including speculative parsing for faster content rendering

Although there’s lots of improvement, especially on speed, Firefox 3.1b2 lacks of supportive add-ons. When I upgraded my Firefox from 2.0 to 3.1b2, I lost most of my add-ons because of their incompatibility. Anyway, Firefox is still the best for me. You can download 3.1b2 version here.

Four years ago, when I visited my friend’s house, I noticed a red square shortcut on his monitor screen (that was when I had no idea whatsoever about computer). When I asked him about that, he said that it was shutdown shortcut. A couple months after that (when I am surprisingly very interested in computer), I tried to make one. But…I failed. After some searching on internet, I found that the application for shutting down the computer lied on the system32 (named shutdown.exe). From there, I figured out how to create my own shutdown and restart desktop shortcut. Here’s the steps:

1. Right click anywhere on your desktop screen
2. Go to “New->shortcut”
3. Type “C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00″ (for shutdown shortcut) or “C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00″ (for restart shortcut)
4. Click next and name the shortcut you want it to be displayed
5. Click Finish

OK, you’re done. If you need to shutdown or restart your PC, just double click the shortcut.

Launchy is a utility which lets you launch programs, documents, bookmarks, etc using search-based launcher. The idea is very simple but convenient for users who love typing or for you who have lost your mouse’s aggressivity (which is kind of annoying). Well, I didn’t have any interest using this program the first time my friend offered it to me. But since my mouse has grown wild lately, I have no choice but to try it. And, voala, I love it so much. Finally, I can say goodbye to my desktop shortcut and start menu option. Here’s how to set up launchy on your computer:

1. Download the sofware (which is free) and install it on your computer

2. launch the program (default hotkey “[Alt] [Space]“)

3. Type the program, document or bookmark you want to launch in the search bar and you’ll get suggestions for the programs correlated with the keyword

4. finally, type enter to launch it.

Firefox’s popularity has grown quite rapid for the last few years. Comes with cool features, a bunch of security options and tons of extensions, Firefox continues to devour IE’s market share (around 20% worldwide). As the open source browser which receives many awards, Firefox offers many cool features to improve user’s productivity. One of the coolest features that Firefox has is “keyword for search box”. This feature is cool and very fun to use. These are the steps of how to use it:

1. open up your favorite search engine (let’s say Google)
2. Right click on the box and choose “Add a keyword for this search” option
3. Choose easy to remember name and keyword (for example “Go”)
4. Choose the bookmark folder to save the keyword and press OK
5. If you need to search for something, go to Firefox’s address bar and type “Go” <space> “anything you’re searching for”.

But since wikis are basically written by contributed people around the world, their information sometimes unreliable. Well, it’s good to have wikis around though. All we have to do is just check the information which we consider important and critical. well, just imagine when you’re sick and you’re looking for some herbs to cure it in wikis. 1. if you’d like to find a brief profile of someone or something, just type “who is or what is xxx” (fill xxx with the one or the thing you’re looking for)

2. calculating something, such as

a. typing “days in a year” will show you how many days are in a year

b. typing “20 USD in EUR” will show you the conversion from dollar to EUR

3. Ask for anything else such as

a. president of USA

b. where is the Eiffel Tower

c. etc…

well, that’s juat a small part among thousand of tricks you can play with google. I know i will add nothing with this post to the experienced user, but i hope it can help Google’s newbies to use Google more than just searching machine.

wah…enak banget dah. Terutama yang versi konser.

Krisis ekonomi global sudah di depan mata. Hujan badai belum ada tanda-tanda akan mereda. Bencana alam di mana-mana. Kapankah bangsaku ini akan menikmati senja? Yah, begitulah mungkin sekelumit kata-kata yang bisa melukiskan keadaan bangsaku sekarang ini. Mulai dari UU pornografi yang tidak kunjung selesai menuai pro dan kontra sampai acara televisi yang kian menggila (Gosip semua), di sini, di negara Indonesia tercinta.

Yup, rekan-rekan pasti sudah pada dengar tentang berita yang sedang hangat akhir-akhir ini. Yah, tentang UU pornografi. Salah satu undang-undang yang paling menimbulkan pro dan kontra saat ini. Pagi tadi aku sempat melihat-lihat berita di kaskus.us dan disitu nongol bahasan tentang penolokan Bali atas UU pornografi. “Klick”, halaman terbuka, aku bener-bener terkejut dengan reaksi rekan-rekan semua menanggapi thread ini. Hampir sebagian besar mendukung bali dalam upayanya mengajukan keberatan atas UU ini. Yang tidak aku mengerti, kenapa sih orang-orang ngotot banget menentang UU pornografi. Ini UU kan buat melindungi kaum hawa dan juga anak-anak yang kian hari kian menjadi sebuah objek ketimbang subjek (pelejaran bahasa Indonesia). Apa salahnya sih pakai pakaian yang enak dilihat, menutup aurat dan juga sopan.

yah…yah…yah…kita memang punya adat yang berbeda-beda, punya beraneka ragam suku dan agama. Tapi UU pornografi kan tidak menyangkut hal-hal yang berhubungan dengan adat. Apakah goyang ngebor sambil nyanyi dangdut juga termasuk adat. Kagak kan, goyang kan emang reaksi spontan kalo denger lagu dangdut. Beberapa hari yang lalu aku juga sempet dimintai pendapat sama rekan forum tentang perkembangan dangdut di Indonesia. Anehnya, sebagian besar orang berpendapat kalo dangdut itu kuno gara-gara yang nyanyi pake pakaian ala nomaden gitu (kurang kain maksudnya). Kalo udah kayak gini lalu apa salahnya sih dibuat sebuah UU yang mengatur masalah perilaku porno ini. Aku yakin bangsa kita bisa lebih maju kalo tingkat konsumsi masyarakat akan pornografi bisa lebih ditekan. Kita sudah di ranking 5 sekarang bro perihal konsumsi pornografi ini. Malah sudah di ranking 2 kalo masalah kemudahan akses konten pornografi. Ayolah, bangsa ini sudah cukup tercemar dengan berbagai masalah. UU ini bisa jadi segelintir tools buat nyaring zat-zat pencemar itu. Yah, aku sadar banget kok kalo aku ini masih jauh dari baik buat nulis kritik tentang masalah ini. Tapi apa salahnya kalo kita merenung sejenak, “mau kemana bangsa ini akan kita bawa”.

Hidup kita cuma sebentar teman. Paling 60-70 tahun maksimal kita bisa menghisap indahnya dunia ini. Setelah mati kita mau ke mana? Aku jadi teringat kata-kata dosenku dulu kalau beliau sangat yakin beliau akan melihat Indonesia menjadi pusat peradaban dunia sebelum beliau meninggal. Akankah itu terwujud? Semua jawaban ada dipundak kita teman. Terutama para pemuda. Kan ada pepatah yang bilang, siapa yang menguasai pemuda, dia menguasai dunia. Mari lakukan sedikit perubahan, mulai dari yang kecil, mulai dari diri sendiri dan MULAI SEKARANG!!!!

Hi guys, today I am going to give you a review-based-on-experience of me after using IBM Lotus Symphony. Just so you know (if you still don’t know what this software does), this software is used in day to day office job such us word processing, spreadsheet and presentation. Yeah, just like Microsoft word, Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Power Point. The only different is this software is made by IBM.
Ok, here is my opinion after using the software for quite a while now:

1. I don’t know if it’s just me or what, but the load time for opening the software seems taking a little bit too long.

2. Nice graphical interface, I think they’ve done a good job making it. More importantly, they’re better than the open office one.

3. Huge file. Yeah, more than 400 MB in my hard drive. (I only got 40 GB of hard drive space so it definitely kills me).

Ok, that’s all. Hehe…
Well, this software is nothing compared with Microsoft’s but since it’s free, I’ll be a good alternative.
